Track 14: “Since You Came Along”

Single Release Date: n/a

My Thoughts/Interpretation/Insights: Here we are at the fourteenth (and final) track of the album, “Since You Came Along”. This one seems more of a mystery than the 13th track. I say that because the last track (“Do It Well”) was listed on the Digital Booklet for the album, but this one was not. I’m not sure who wrote this one.

I do know that I like this song. This one, for some reason, has a sound that is more like his current album (THE MOUNTAIN). The narrator sings of how his life is better now that his girl has come into his life. Not quite a prelude to “Woman, Amen”, but certainly headed in that direction. It has a classic country sound, and yet sounds a bit more like a “Western”, if that makes any sense.

What do you think of the song? Have you heard it before? Do you like it? Do you know if it is available anywhere besides the iTunes version of the album?

Listen to the song and follow along with the lyrics below! Enjoy!

Since You Came Along
Written by ?

Been rolling down a rusty old set of tracks,
Like a passing train you know ain’t coming back.
With a head of steam and a heart of coal,
And a hunger for living fast.

Spent a lot of time at the dead end of the street,
Too full of pride to ever hit my knees.
Like the cracks in the asphalt,
I wore my scars on my sleeve.

Since you came along,
You’ve filled in all the spaces,
Erased all of the traces,
Of the broken man I used to be baby.
Everything is right and all the lonely days and nights are gone,
Ever since you came along,
Ever since you came along.

Took finding you to see how lost I was,
Now you’re the sun I need to keep coming up.
And all the pieces of the puzzle,
Falling into place because…

Since you came along,
You’ve filled in all the spaces,
Erased all of the traces,
Of the broken man I used to be baby.
Everything is right and all the lonely days and nights are gone,
Ever since you came along.

Since you came along,
You’ve filled in all the spaces,
Erased all of the traces,
Of the broken man I used to be baby.
Everything is right and all the lonely days and nights are gone,
Ever since you came along.

Yeah you filled in all the spaces,
Erased all of the traces,
Of the broken man I used to be baby.
Everything is right and all the lonely days and nights are gone,
Ever since you came along,
Ever since you came along.

Track 13: “Do It Well”

Single Release Date: n/a

My Thoughts/Interpretation/Insights: Some of you may have thought that I would be done exploring this album as most versions of the album only have 12 tracks. The iTunes version of the album, however, has 14 tracks. I’m not sure if you can get the extra two tracks anywhere else.

This track has our narrator trying to convince a girl that he can love her better than anyone else. All the rest of the boys lining up to be with her will only break her heart, but he feels he has what it takes to show her true love. The song itself is enjoyable, but not one of the stronger songs on the album. Certainly not a bad song, but I can understand if the album had to be kept to 12 tracks why this one may have not made the cut. I would love to know how many tracks Dierks has in the vault that have never been released. I hope we get a box set one day that pulls some of these out!

Do It Well
Written by Radney Foster and Dierks Bentley

I’m here to break your heart baby one last time
‘Cause I know what I’m going to say will make you cry
But love’s too precious to watch you waste it all
I’m not here to hurt you I’m here to catch your fall

There’s a long row of heartaches lining up in front of you
Fool after fool trying to see what he can do
Don’t you ever get tired of buying what they’re trying to sell
I’m not saying I’m perfect, hell nobody is
But I’m man enough to hold your tenderness
And if you let me love you I’ll do it well

I’d give anything if you could see the world through my eyes
‘Cause the pain and the price you’re paying is way too high
You been looking for any safe harbor in the storm
But I’m the only one who can mend what’s tattered and torn

There’s a long row of heartaches lining up in front of you
Fool after fool trying to see what he can do
Don’t you ever get tired of buying what they’re trying to sell
I’m not saying I’m perfect, hell nobody is
But I’m man enough to hold your tenderness
And if you let me love you I’ll do it well

Do it well
Like there’s no tomorrow
Do it well
And kiss away all of your sorrow

Not like that long row of heartaches lining up in front of you
Fool after fool trying to see what he can do
Don’t you ever get tired of buying what they’re trying to sell
I’m not saying I’m perfect, hell nobody is
But I’m man enough to hold your tenderness
And if you let me love you I’ll do it well
Baby, if you let me love you I’ll do it well

She Won’t Choose Me [Bonus Track]

Bonus Track

Album: Modern Day Drifter

Album Release Date: May 10, 2005

Label: Capital Records Nashville

Producer: Brett Beavers

Track 13: “She Won’t Choose Me” (Acoustic) | Bonus Track

Single Release Date: n/a

My Thoughts/Interpretation/Insights: I’ve been waiting to talk about this track for a while. The thirteenth track (second bonus track) from the Limited Edition of Modern Day Drifter is “She Won’t Choose Me”. I love this song. It is a very fun, tongue-in-cheek tune about a man in love with a farmer’s daughter who wants nothing to do with him. According to the narrator, she “drives all the cowboys wild”, so it is not just him who sees her as a beauty. For whatever reason, according to him she is more interested in chewing tobacco than him. This is just a fun song. There is no other way to describe it. It is another one that I don’t get sick of. My daughter and I love to sing along to it while I am driving. How about you? Do you like this one?

Follow along with the lyrics below as you listen to it. I have also included two short videos that I found on YouTube where Dierks sang the song live. Enjoy!

She Won’t Choose Me
Written by Brett Beavers and Dierks Bentley

(1…2…3…4)

Thought I’d died and gone to Heaven
When I first saw her there
Standin’ in a sweat-stained Stetson
With her cow at the County Fair
I thought I knew how to make a move
But I can’t make her mine
I wish I could forget her but there’s just somethin’ in her smile

‘Cause she chews tobacco, rides on her tractor
Drives all the cowboys wild
She’s a tall drink of water
A real farmer’s daughter
For her love, I’d walk a country mile
But I can’t get within spittin’ distance
No matter how I beg or plead
My heart’s crackin’ ’cause she chews tobacco
But she won’t choose me

Well her momma said she liked old westerns
So I did my best John Wayne
Said I bet we’d go together like grits on a gravy train
When I leaned in she gave a little grin
And puckered up her lips
And hit right where she was aimin’
Now there’s a little brown stain on my boot tips

‘Cause she chews tobacco, rides on her tractor
Drives all the cowboys wild
She’s a tall drink of water
A real farmer’s daughter
For her love, I’d walk a country mile
But I can’t get within spittin’ distance
No matter how I beg or plead
My heart’s crackin’ ’cause she chews tobacco
But she won’t choose me

I know it’s wrong but I can’t resist
Thinkin’ ’bout the taste of that first kiss

‘Cause she chews tobacco, rides on her tractor
Drives all the cowboys wild
She’s a tall drink of water
A real farmer’s daughter
For her love, I’d walk a country mile
But I can’t get within spittin’ distance
No matter how I beg or plead
My heart’s crackin’ ’cause she chews tobacco
But she won’t choose me

My heart’s crackin’
‘Cause she chews tobacco
But you know she won’t choose me

(Dierks: Come on, Dude. She won’t choose tobacco, but she’ll choose me. What?

Brett: It’s genius!

Dierks: What song is that?

Brett: It’s killer, Dude

Dierks: Yeah. They’re gonna love it or hate it.)

Domestic, Light and Cold (Bonus Track | Alternate Version)

Bonus Track

Album: Modern Day Drifter

Album Release Date: May 10, 2005

Label: Capital Records Nashville

Producer: Brett Beavers

Track 12: “Domestic, Light and Cold” (Duet with Cody Canada) | Bonus Track | Alternate Version

Single Release Date: n/a

My Thoughts/Interpretation/Insights: You thought I was done with Modern Day Drifter? Not quite. I have the Limited Edition CD with bonus tracks. The twelfth track (and first bonus track) is “Domestic, Light and Cold”. This is an alternate version that brings in Cody Canada (formerly with Cross Canadian Ragweed) for a duet with Dierks. I don’t have much to add to my original post on the standard version of this song. This one has some slight alterations to the lyrics (see below – Cody’s lines are in green text). I think I prefer the original version slightly more over this one, but this one is a lot of fun. At the end of the song, Dierks and Cody talk out the close of the song and it culminates in a hilarious “Dude”/”Bro” battle. I’m not 100% sure who wins, but it sounds like Dierks whispering “Dude” one last time at the very end.

Unfortunately, I have not found a copy of the song on YouTube that I can link to at this time. I’ll update this post if I find one later. Here are the altered lyrics. Enjoy!

Domestic, Light and Cold (Duet with Cody Canada of Cross Canadian Ragweed)
Written by Brett Beavers and Dierks Bentley

Hey bartender
Can I make one special request?
My woman left me
So tonight I’ll be drinkin’ your best
I’m not talkin’ ’bout single malt Scotch, Jagermeister, or Cuervo Gold
I’ll take anything domestic, light and cold
Chorus:
Domestic, light and cold
That’s what I’m havin’
Serve me up any old
Iced-down American classic
Pop a top, crack a can
Just don’t make me wait too long
I’ll take anything domestic, light and cold
No, he wasn’t cheatin’
But she just said that he was hard to please
And let’s face it
Dierks can be set in his country ways
Now where I’m from a friend don’t let
friend drink all alone
So I’ll take anything domestic, light and cold.
(Repeat Chorus)
You’ve got beer from all over the world
On the wall
I can even get a free t-shirt
If I try them all
But tonight we’re in the mood
For some of that homegrown brew

Yeah, pop a top, crack a can
Just don’t make me wait too long
I’ll take anything domestic
Hey, I know what the best is
Anything domestic, light and cold
(Dierks: Hey Bartender, me and my friend, Cody Canada will take a couple domestic, light and cold beers over here
Cody: I don’t see a bartender.
Dierks: Dude, you’re supposed to pretend.
Cody: I’m not up for pretending, man
Dierks: It’s the end of the song. We’re kinda talking our way out ’til the music’s over.
Cody: Well, let’s go get a beer at a bar.
Dierks: We gotta wait for these guys to get done playin’
Cody: When you sing on my record we’re not gonna do this.
Dierks: We have to go get Cody a beer
Cody: It’s like singin’ song with my brother’s kid
Dierks: Dude
Cody: Bro
Dierks: Dude
Cody: Bro
Dierks: Dude
Cody: Bro
Dierks: Dude
Cody: Bro
Dierks: Dude)
